Walking the Lycian Way, Kalkan, Turkey

 

Trek through the ancient region of Lycia following one of Turkey’s most spectacular coastal trails the Lycian Way.

Led by an expert walking guide we spend six days hiking along the famous Lycian Way staying in small villages en route.

We will trek through the foothills of the Taurus mountains, explore the Lycian ruins at Patara and look for signs of the loggerhead turtles which are protected on the 16 km sandy beach.

Dramatic views over the Turquoise coast as we walk along ancient paths and trails, stopping in remote villages en-route.
We see blankets of spring flowers and rare orchids, soft morning mists in the Taurus mountains.

We pass through pine, oak and juniper forests and climb on ancient paths to seemingly impassable valleys with high altitude pastures.

Accommodation ranges from small comfortable hotels (some with swimming pools) to friendly village houses and trekkers lodges. We receive a warm welcome from local villagers and gain a real insight into rural life in this stunning region.

Traditional Turkish meals are a real highlight of the holiday. This region is known for the excellence of its local produce which is locally sourced, primarily organic and of a very high standard.

Your luggage will be taken each day and delivered to your accommodation to await your arrival on foot.

Walking Holidays Sample Itinerary

 

Below is a typical schedule of our walking holidays. The exact walks may vary slightly depending on the weather and the group’s interest.

The walks are graded as easy or moderate and the maximum altitude we walk to in 925m. The routes are all planned carefully and are led by trained guides who know the area very well. They have been leading treks in this area for over 20 years and have an expert knowledge of the flora and fauna of this stunning region.

We walk through the ancient province of Lycia and on some days join one of Turkey’s most spectacular coastal trails, the Lycian Way. We explore Patara’s Roman ruins (birthplace of Saint Nicholas) and the stunning golden sandy beach.

Breakfast: 8.30 am – 9.30 am
Day Walk: 10.00 am – 5.00 pm
Free Time: 5.00 pm – 7.30 pm
Pre-Dinner Drinks: 7.30 pm

A Typical Week

 

Day 1: Arrival Day

We will meet you at Dalaman airport and take you to Fethiye to a small hotel where you will meet your fellow walkers. Depending on flight arrival times, you can share an evening meal in a local, Turkish restaurant.

Day 2: Trek to Deserted Greek Village of Kayakoy

Climbing past the remains of the Castle of the Knights of St John, we pick up the ancient cobbled road that connects Fethiye (Old Name Meğri – Telmessos) and Kayaköy.

Continuing through the foothills of the Taurus mountains we descend for a welcome swim in the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean before reaching the village of Kayaköy where we spend the night in a small hotel.

Day 3: Trek to Faralya Along the Lycian Way

The trail takes us to the shoulders of Babadağ (Father Mountain 2000m) with magnificent views of Ölüdeniz lagoon and St Nicholas island.

Cresting the pass we trek through villages nestled under the summit of the mountain before descending to Faralya Village perched on the edge of the famous butterfly valley.

Day 4: Trek to Gey Village

We hike through pine forests opening out to magnificent terraces with views over the Mediterranean to the distant islands.

Skirting above the pristine beach at Kabak village we climb on an ancient path to a seemingly impassable valley. Cresting to the ridge of Alınca, we can enjoy a glass of hot tea to soak up the vistas of the ‘seven capes’ spread out below.

We continue to the rustic village of Gey, perched on a headland of ancient terraces.

Day 5: Trek to Ancient Lycian Ruins and Beach at Patara via Ancient Site of Sidyma

Trek through stunning coastal scenery to the remote village of Bel where we stop for tea. Continue via the ancient site of Sidyma with its well preserved Roman and Byzantine tombs to Patara, birthplace of St Nicholas.

Day 6: Trek to Delikkemer

Hike through pine forest to the fascinating Roman engineering masterpiece of Delikkemer aqueduct, a reverse siphon system.

Explore ancient ruins at Patara including the Lycian Parliament building and amphitheatre.

Patara is home to many bird species and is the nesting ground of the endangered loggerhead turtle. Swim from Patara beach in the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean sea.

Day 7: Trek to Mt. Bozkaya and Overnight in Kas

We trek through pine, oak, juniper and then Lebanese Cedar forests, to Mount Bozkaya at 2050 m high.
Continue to Kas, a small friendly town to spend the final night of our Lycian odyssey.

Day 8: Farewell to the Lycian Way and Turquoise Coast

After a leisurely breakfast we take you back to Dalaman airport for your flight home or onward journey.
